Wave curtains | A stylish way to dress your windows

The advantage of made to measure curtains is that they offer a completely bespoke finish to suit your style and window configuration. The header or ‘pleat’ of a curtain refers to how the fabric is gathers at the top. There are several different pleat options to choose from, each offering you a different look. Originally invented by Silent Gliss, the wave curtain heading is a popular, on trend and stylish way to dress your windows.

What is a wave curtain?

The wave heading is a contemporary alternative to hang on a specialised wave track. Using specialist wave tape sewn onto your fabric, the track gliders are designed to stop at set increments to form a uniformed ripple, creating the ‘wave’ effect. These are great for larger windows or bifold/sliding doors where traditional pole options may not work, particularly if there is limited space to stack the curtains back, when they are fully open. The wave heading is available in two sizes – a 60mm wave and an 80mm wave.

Are all fabrics suitable for a Wave?

Regretfully no, not all fabrics are suitable for wave curtains. Whilst most fabrics can be made into a wave, heavy or stiff fabrics will likely be too rigid to form a good drape in a wave format.

Irregular stripe pattern that goes against the wave may also not be suitable, as you would lose sections of the patterns in the folds.

Fabrics will flexibility and movement are normally well suited to wave curtains. Voile fabric also works well in the wave heading. Voiles are great for when we want to diffuse sunlight or offer a little privacy, without blocking your view completely. Voiles also help soften a space, where larger thicker curtains aren’t necessary.

Wide width fabrics are ideal for wave curtains as long as your curtain drop is less than the width of fabric (Typically 280cm wide). These fabrics allows us to make up curtains without any joins across the width, providing a seamless look. Wide width fabrics are mostly available in plains or textures.

The simpler ripple effect is also great for showing larger pattern repeats to their best advantage. You can use the wave with plain fabrics and most patterns.

60mm Wave or 80mm Wave?

The 60mm or 80mm size refers to the depth of the pleat. It is important to consider the practical elements between the different size options of wave.

60mm:

Shallower wave

ideal a narrower depth window, where a curtain is sitting in the reveal.

Suitable for smaller windows

The smaller pleat suits smaller windows better, creating a more proportionate look.

Minimalist look

The smaller pleats means that the wave is less pronounced for a more subtle appearance

Larger stack

As the pleat is smaller, generally more pleats are required across the width generating a larger stack. Consider this if space is limited for your curtain to stack back into.

80mm:

Deeper wave

Ideal for larger windows such a patio or bi fold doors, to give a more proportioned look

Smaller stack

Because of the deeper waves, fewer pleats are needed compared to a wave 60mm. As a result, the curtains to stack back tighter. This is ideal for areas with limited space to house the curtain.

Pronounced pleat

Being a deeper pleat, this creates a more pronounced wave look. This is perfect for making your curtains a focal point or feature in your room.

When considering practical elements, the choice ultimately falls to personal preference. The wave 80 is our most popular choice of the two.
